Biography

My name is Karina Dukalska. I was born on the 1st December 1993 in a small city in Poland called Kielce. At the age of six my family decided to move to Holland. Back then I thought my life was being torn apart, because I was leaving my family and home behind. But now, I look back, and can’t do anything else than thank my parents. This move changed my life, in a way that cannot be described. In my opinion it shaped me into the person I am today; a happy and powerful young woman.

I’ve been going to international schools from the very beginning. Currently I am a senior at the International School of The Hague. This multicultural environment I’ve been in for the last eleven years made me very open minded. My friends come from all over the world. They share their stories about their home lands and other places they moved to, and this boosts my passion of travelling. I have seen a mayor part of Europe, but also Kenya and Cuba. Yet I am still thirsty to see more. My priority on my long list right now is Australia, India and Mexico. I know that seeing these places will make me grow. Not only widen my cultural understanding, but also expand on my artistic perspectives.

Other than travelling, I love photography –in particular lomography- and to paint with oil paint. I’ve been painting at a gallery run by Margarita Garces since 2003. My first works were pure observations of nature, and now they have developed into a play of colour and contrast. In my opinion, this is because all of my interests are starting to merge together. My recent paintings present the play of colour that is very common in lomography, details and contrast found in photography, and the main objects painted are gathered from places I have seen. All my travelling is reflected in my paintings. Without the travelling, I would not be able to present the authentic atmosphere of the places in my paintings. I try to present the passionate feeling that I soak in during my trips. I hope that the viewers can connect to the places that I have painted, in the same manner as I do. This is because the way I see the world is expressed through my works. They are windows which reveal my appreciation to the world in which we live in. In the future I plan to continue painting, to show the true colours of places that seem to be dull or neglected.
